The Truth About Our Protein Powder: Why We Have to Stop Selling It

Let me take you back to how we ended up here.

It all started around 11 years ago, with my first—and only—natural bodybuilding competition. I didn’t win, but I felt like I looked great. Now, if you know anything about bodybuilding, you know the diet is everything. Protein, protein, and more protein—along with other key nutrients, of course. But mostly protein.

That sounds exciting in theory, right? But after months of eating nothing but plain chicken, fish, and steak, you'll start to crave some variety. On average, you need around 1.7–2g of protein per kilogram of body weight to build lean muscle if you're very active (resistance training). That meant I was aiming for around 190g–220g of protein per day. For maintenance, it's closer to 0.75–1.4g per kilo.

Anyway, here I was, desperately trying to hit my protein goals. And what’s the quickest, easiest way to get in all that protein? Protein shakes, of course! A chocolate milkshake for protein? Count me in!

Shakes are perfect if you don’t have the time or knowledge to prepare protein-rich meals, and they can be a lifesaver when you're on the go. So, I indulged, drinking chocolate and vanilla shakes like a kid in a candy store, with no limits. It was amazing.

But there was a problem. A big problem!

One of the main ingredients in most protein shakes is whey protein, which is a by-product of milk. And here's the kicker—while I like to call myself a “6’3 chocolate man,” I’ve got a pretty serious issue with dairy. Turns out, I’m lactose intolerant. But back then, I didn’t know what was happening.

After finishing the competition, I thought I could get back to my normal routine, rehydrate, and smash those shakes. But I couldn’t process dairy the same way anymore. My relationship with cheese, milk, pizza, and yes, even chocolate, was ruined. I mean, have you seen how many foods have dairy in them?

I was devastated. I’d sit in restaurants, making snarky comments to my friends who could eat dairy—"You're drinking the milk of a cow, you know?"—while deep down I was bitter…. I was hating and they knew it.

Sometimes I’d say, “F**k it!” and indulge in a cheesecake or some chocolate Hobnobs, but my body would always have the last laugh.

So, I started wondering: what was it in those protein shakes that made me so intolerant to dairy?

And that’s when I fell down the rabbit hole.

What I discovered shocked me.

Here are just a few of the things I learned

1. One Batch Rule

Many food products only need to meet the advertised guidelines with just one batch. That’s right—one single batch!

2. Vast Differences in Regulations

The rules for producing and importing food into the UK are vastly different, which means the cleanliness standards can vary dramatically.

3. Underegulated Supplements

Protein supplements, in particular, were very underregulated, and I was shocked to learn how little oversight there was on what went into them.

The more I dug into this, the more I realized how much I had been putting questionable products into my body. So, I had a choice: I could either feel sorry for myself, or I could do something about it.

That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and develop a better product—one that I could actually enjoy and that would be safe for my clients to use, without any of the issues I had experienced.

Why Protein Is So Important?

Before I go on, let’s talk about why protein is so crucial in the first place.

Protein plays a vital role in regulating your hunger hormones. It reduces ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and boosts the appetite-reducing hormones GLP-1, peptide YY, and cholecystokinin.

Essentially, eating more protein helps you feel fuller for longer, which naturally reduces overall calorie intake—helping with weight loss.

There are also a ton of other nutrients that we often lack in our regular diets, which is why a good protein powder can be such a game-changer for supporting a healthy diet and achieving your fitness goals.

Creating a Superior Product

So, after learning all this, I decided to go ahead and design a far superior protein product. Over the next three years and after tens of thousands of pounds invested, I worked with my professors from the University of London South Bank and King’s College to develop a formula that would outperform 90% of the products out there.

I worked with UK-based manufacturers to create a product I could be proud of. Every batch was tested, and I made sure it was made fresh, right here in the UK. It wasn’t easy, though. I drove hours to visit the factory, spent countless weekends on the road (I’d drive to Ireland on Sunday nights to pick up fresh batches of protein and drive back listening to 2010 Ibiza hits), and still managed to hand-deliver orders when I could.

I had something special on my hands: a well-researched, high-quality protein powder that I truly believed would change the industry.

But there was one problem...

The Reality of Running a Business

I put my heart and soul into it. But as much as I loved the product, the business side of things wasn’t as smooth.

My branding was rough—I designed the first logo myself before all the design apps existed, and it was... not great. My packaging was basic, and with limited funds, I couldn’t afford to hire a designer. It was tough, but I was proud of the product, even if the business side of things was a learning curve.

I sold to a small group of clients—about 30 of them—and they loved it. But by the time the year had passed, I had sold all of it but somehow and had lost money. Even though I was terrible at running a business, I was proud that I had created something people loved.

Fast forward to today, and the protein powder has evolved. It’s still one of the highest-quality products on the market and has sold thousands of tubs. But for me, this was never about the money—it was about ensuring my clients (and myself) had the best possible fuel for their bodies.

The End of Our Protein Journey

So why am I telling you all of this now? Why is the headline that our protein brand is coming to an end?

Well, this year, our UK manufacturer went into default and bankruptcy, leaving us with a £17,000 loss and unfinished orders. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but it’s part of the journey.I’ve spent months searching for a new manufacturer, but with the rising cost of ingredients, it’s just too expensive for me to continue at the quality level we’ve maintained.

So, the reality is: that our protein brand is coming to an end. But that’s not the end of the story.

I’m committed to finding new ways to bring you the best products possible in the future. I’m not done yet. Stay tuned for more updates, and know that we will be back, bigger and better than ever.

In the meantime, there are many great protein brands out there that can help you hit your goals.
